Are you struggling to hit crisp and controlled wedge shots? The first thing to
understand is the body has two functions in the golf swing, seeking and maintaining
balance. To attain controlled wedge shots you need to eliminate the body’s need to seek
balance. A body that is seeking balance never established balance prior to motion. Keep
the set up simple; begin with stacking and aligning your ankles, knees, hips, and
shoulders all squarely with one another. The hands should meet directly in the center of
the body, once the hands and shaft are ninety degrees to the center of the body, the golf
ball should sit forward of the club face. Now that balance has been established in your
set up, your motion needs to possess equal parts of both speed and length throughout the
back swing and through swing. For those hitting thin wedge shots, your back swing is
typically too slow and short compared to the faster and longer through swing. This is an
example of an unbalanced motion. For those hitting “fat,” shots your back swing is
typically too long and slow as compared to your short and abbreviated through swing.
This is another example of an unbalanced motion. The balance of both body and motion
will maximize club head speed through the hitting area allowing you to hit crisp and
controlled wedge shots.
