The first - “beginnings”
The start of any golf course should set the tone for the round. The first at Grand Elk is a strategic par 5 that offers golfers the opportunity to get off to a comfortable start, or play the risk to reap the reward of an early birdie. The tee shot immediately gives players an option. One can play to the left side short of the fairway bunkers, which is the safer option. While distance of tee shots down the left must be controlled, to avoid the bunkers, this angle provides a more direct approach to lay up or the green, for those who can reach the green in two. The right side of the landing area gives the player a chance to hit a further shot, but this side is bordered by a natural wetland area, but the angle of the approach is not quite as good as from the left. The lay up area also offers options. The closer to the green the player gets, the more trouble comes into play with a deep bunker on the left and the natural wetland area on the right. And, while laying up closer to the green leaves a shorter approach to the green, we will let you decide if this is the best play. The front area of the green complex is shaped to allow players to use slope to feed the ball back to the green, but there is also a slope that will take a haphazard approaches into a collection area left of the green. The green itself is the most undulating on the course and play to the correct with the approach is critical to making putts. When the pin is in the front half of the green, players should make every effort to stay short of middle and when the pin is the back, whether on the small back level or in the bottom level, play should be past middle.
