Purgatory Village
Experience the best skiing of the southwest.
Purgatory Village
Let's face it. While there's more to a winter vacation than just skiing, (especially here in Durango), the modern amenities of today's winter vacation are all here because of skiing. From the days when Jack Rabbit Johnson used skis to complete his ambitious Sierra Nevada mail routes, to a time when we can follow our modern ski heroes on the world wide web, the love of skiing has been at the core of it all. For some, it's the feeling of arcing a turn through soft snow, shoulders in the fall line, gravity working its simple magic. For others, it's the breathtaking excitement of boarding a chairlift for the first time, or feeling your instructor's words come to life as you link parallel turns.
Words like unique, and legendary, have probably been a bit overworked by ski area marketing types - but the Purgatory mountain is truly a special case. Glaciers covered these slopes during the last Ice Age, and because of a geologic whim, our mountain today is defined by an addictive blend of roller coaster benches and headwalls, double fall lines and glades - and a character that is as individual as your own.
The mountain features 75 trails across 2,500 acres, and has something to please everyone. Beginners have approximately 23% of our 1,200 skiable acres to learn on, and can enjoy the views from the top of the mountain along with the rest of their group. The Columbine Beginner Area is a place for first-timers to call their own, with its own restaurant and lifts.
Advanced and expert skiers love the front side, where they can access the steeps of Styx, Pandemonium, Lower Hades and Catharsis, by riding our new high-speed, six person super chair - The Purgatory Village Express.
